Community Helpers: Goods or Services

1st Grade Social StudiesCommunity Helpers3 pages

About this worksheet

This 3-page 1st grade social studies sheet introduces goods and services through community helpers. A box on page 1 says goods are things you can touch that people make or grow, and services are work people do to help others, with a toy maker and a vet as examples. Students sort eight helpers into GOODS and SERVICES. Page 2 asks for one helper for each group in a sentence frame. The key shows the sort and accepts any matching helper on page 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Goods and Services Box

Two short definitions with an example each, a toy maker for goods and a vet for services.

Sort the Helpers

Farmer, doctor, baker, barber, carpenter who builds a table, teacher, chef and mail carrier sit in word boxes. Students write each one under GOODS or SERVICES.

Complete the Sentences

Two frames, 'A helper who makes goods is a ___' and 'A helper who gives a service is a ___', with a picture of a chef holding a loaf and a mail carrier below.

Answers

The sort, four helpers in each column, and a note that any helper who fits the group is accepted on page 2.

How teachers use it

Touch test

Hold up a book and ask if you can touch it. That turns the definition on page 1 into something students can test before they sort.

Argue about the chef

The chef is the item most likely to start a debate, since a chef also serves people. The key puts the chef under goods because a chef makes food. Let students argue it, then agree.

Add your own

Ask for two more helpers for each column, such as a bus driver or a painter. Students who can do that have the idea.
