Community Helpers Labeling

About this worksheet

Six cartoon community helpers fill a picture grid on this 1st grade social studies sheet, and students write the right job under each one. The word bank lists doctor, firefighter, teacher, police officer, mail carrier, and farmer, so every name is used once. Each picture carries a clue, such as the stethoscope, the fire truck and hose, or the letter in the mail carrier's hand. An answer page gives the names row by row. The task fits the C3 Framework indicator D2.Civ.2.K-2 on the roles people play in a community.

โ€œExplain how all people, not just official leaders, play important roles in a community.โ€

Naming all six helpers, from the mail carrier to the farmer, shows students that many people besides leaders do jobs the community needs.

What's inside this worksheet

Who Helps Our Community

Students look at two rows of pictures and copy a name from the word bank into the space under each helper. The teacher points at a "Welcome Class" chalkboard with an apple in hand, the police officer wears a blue uniform and badge, and the farmer holds a pitchfork next to a red tractor.

Answers

The top row reads Doctor, Firefighter, Teacher. The bottom row reads Police Officer, Mail Carrier, Farmer.

How teachers use it

Unit starter

Put the six pictures on the board before you hand out the sheet and ask students which of these people they saw this week. Mail carrier and police officer usually get the most hands.

Writing support

First graders spend most of the time copying the words, not choosing them. Point out that "police officer" and "mail carrier" are two words each, so the line needs space for both.

Follow-up talk

When the sheet is done, pick one helper and ask what the town would be like without that job for a day. The farmer picture starts a good talk about where food comes from.
