Sorting skyscrapers, subways, and busy traffic to the city and tractors, barns, and crop fields to the farm asks students to name what each place is like.
Students read items A to I, including "Subways and lots of taxis," "Big fields of crops," and "Very busy traffic." On the next page they write each letter inside the City circle, the Farm circle, or the overlap marked Both. Pictures of a taxi, a subway train, a barn, a tractor, a school, and a market stand ring the diagram as clues.
City gets C, E, and I. Farm gets A, F, and G. Both gets B, D, and H: homes for families, schools, and places to buy food.

Let partners argue each letter aloud before anyone writes. The Both items cause the most debate, because some students are sure farm families shop only in the city.
Anchor chart
Draw the same two circles on chart paper and move sticky notes for A to I as the class agrees. Keep the chart up for the rest of the communities unit.

Ask students who finish first to add one more item of their own to each section, then test it on a neighbor.
