American Symbols Matching

About this worksheet

Five American symbols run through this 1st grade matching set: the flag, the bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and the White House. Students first join each name to a cartoon picture, then match each symbol to a short meaning, then decide where three of them can be seen. The five pages end with the student's favorite symbol and a reason. The answer key covers all three matching tasks. For standards, the last question fits the C3 Framework indicator D4.1.K-2.

What's inside this worksheet

Picture Match

Students draw lines from five names to five pictures in a jumbled column, such as the Liberty Bell showing its crack and the White House building.

Meaning Match

Students write a letter next to each symbol. The White House is done for them as C, "The house for the President," and the rest include "A green lady holding a torch" and "Our country's strong flying bird."

Location Match

Three symbols match three places: standing in New York Harbor, hanging in our school classroom, and on the back of a quarter coin.

My Favorite Symbol

Students write the name of their favorite American symbol and a sentence on why they chose it.

How teachers use it

Model the first one

Talk through the done example, White House to C, before students start. First graders who miss it tend to draw lines in the meaning match instead of writing letters.

Classroom hunt

Before the location match, ask students to find the flag in the room. It makes "Hanging in our school classroom" an easy first answer.

Opinion writing

Use the favorite-symbol question as a short opinion task. Ask for a because sentence, and share a few reasons at the carpet.
