Blood Vessels and Their Functions Matching

Year 6 ScienceAnimals Including Humans3 pages

About this worksheet

Two matching sets on the circulatory system make up this Year 6 science sheet. In Set 1, pupils match seven terms (artery, vein, capillary, heart, blood, oxygen and nutrients) to definitions lettered A to G. Artery and D is done as an example. Set 2 has six features, such as 'Capillaries are very small', to match to explanations. A last question asks what might happen if one of the Set 2 processes did not work properly. Page 3 gives both answer strings and three sample answers. The sheet is matched to the Year 6 animals, including humans unit in the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Animals, including humans

โ€œIdentify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and bloodโ€

Set 1 names the heart, three blood vessels and blood and matches each to its function. Set 2 questions 1 to 3 explain how the heart, the blood vessels and the capillaries do their jobs.

Set 1 definition G says blood carries oxygen, nutrients and water around the body, and Set 1 item 7 defines nutrients.

What's inside this worksheet

Set 1: Terms and functions

Pupils write a letter beside each of seven terms. The trap is vein against artery: away from the heart is D, back towards it is C.

Set 2: Features and explanations

Six features to match, including 'The heart beats faster during exercise' and 'Blood can carry waste substances'.

Question 7

Pupils choose one Set 2 pair and explain, on four lines, what could go wrong if that process failed.

Answers

Set 1 is 1-D, 2-C, 3-B, 4-E, 5-G, 6-A, 7-F, and Set 2 is 1-D, 2-B, 3-A, 4-F, 5-E, 6-C. Sample answers for question 7 follow.

How teachers use it

Pulse check

Before Set 2 question 5, pupils take their pulse, do 30 seconds of star jumps and take it again. The answer then makes sense.

Artery or vein

Teach 'A for away' before Set 1. Pupils who get 1 and 2 the wrong way round will find the rest harder.

After marking, pupils label a simple heart and lungs diagram using the seven Set 1 terms.
