Reading Pie Charts With Fractions

Year 6 MathsPie Charts3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 6 maths sheet on reading pie charts with fractions. Four charts each have a table where pupils write the fraction and the number of people for every sector. The totals are 40 pupils for favourite sports, 24 families for pets, 32 pupils for breakfast and 60 people for transport. The charts for 32 and 60 are marked into eighths and sixths to help. The key lists every answer and gives equivalent fractions, such as 4/8 for a half. It follows England National Curriculum statistics for Year 6.

How teachers use it

Warm-up

Start with the pets chart, which only has halves and quarters. Pupils say each fraction aloud before they touch the total of 24.

Finding one part

For questions 3 and 4, ask pupils to find the value of one equal part first, 32 divided by 8 and 60 divided by 6. The rest follows.

Mixed groups

Pupils who find fractions hard can stay with questions 1 and 2. The rest do all four and check each total adds up.
