Compare Two Pie Charts

Year 6 MathsPie Charts3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 6 maths sheet on a common trap with pie charts. Page 1 shows the favourite colours of Class A, with 20 pupils, and Class B, with 40 pupils. Pupils find how many chose blue in each class, say whether the bigger blue sector in Class A means more pupils, and work out which class had more choosing green. Page 2 gives Sam's wrong claim about green, asks why sectors cannot be compared across charts, and has pupils write one true and one misleading statement. The key explains each answer. It follows England National Curriculum statistics for Year 6.

Statistics

โ€œinterpret and construct pie charts and line graphs and use these to solve problemsโ€

Pupils use each chart's total to find real numbers, and then compare the two classes.

What's inside this worksheet

Two Classes, Two Charts

Class A and Class B pie charts side by side, with blue, red and green sectors. Three questions ask for numbers and explanations.

Spotting the Pie Chart Trap

Sam says the green sector is 1/4 in both charts, so the numbers match. Pupils explain the trap, say what maths to do first, then write a true and a misleading statement.

Answers

Worked answers using the class totals, such as 1/4 of 20 = 5 and 1/4 of 40 = 10, and example true and misleading statements.

How teachers use it

Prediction vote

Cover the totals and ask which class chose more blue. Most pupils will say Class A. Then reveal 20 and 40 and let them find 10 and 10.

Talk before writing

Give pairs two minutes on Sam's claim before they write on page 2. The explanations are better after the talk.

Swap and judge

Pupils swap their true and misleading statements for question 3 and decide which is which. Disagreements are worth a short whole-class talk.
