Modal Verbs in Persuasive Writing

Year 5 EnglishModal Verbs3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 modal verbs in persuasive writing, over three pages. Pupils read a six-sentence letter asking the head teacher for a longer playtime, where might and could make every sentence sound unsure, and rewrite it with should, must and will. In Task 2 they write their own persuasive paragraph with at least three underlined modal verbs, on a topic such as a class pet or no homework on Fridays. Page 3 has sample answers. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 5 grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Make the Letter Stronger

A short letter to the head teacher that begins Playtime could be longer every day. Pupils rewrite it on ten lines, using should, must and will where they make sense.

Write Your Own Persuasive Paragraph

A box of topic ideas (a class pet, no homework on Fridays, growing vegetables in the school garden) and a box of seven useful modal verbs. Pupils write a paragraph and underline at least three modals.

Answers

A sample rewritten letter and two sample paragraphs, one about a class pet and one about no homework on Fridays, with the modal verbs underlined.

How teachers use it

Read it twice

Read the weak letter aloud, then read a pupil's stronger version. Ask which one a head teacher would be more likely to act on.

One-minute argument

Before Task 2, pairs pick a topic from the ideas box and argue for it for a minute. Then they write.

Marking

Check the underlined modals in Task 2 first. The key suggests looking for at least three used accurately.
