Year 5 modal verbs, over three pages. Pupils rewrite eight sentences by changing the modal verb, for example making We will win the match less certain or turning You may wear your jumper into an order. A word bank offers will, must, should, could and might. Page 2 asks which verb made a sentence an order and how might changes a sentence. Page 3 gives sample answers, with other verbs that also work. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 5 grammar.

Items 1 to 8 ask pupils to change a modal verb to make a sentence more or less certain. Question 2 asks them to explain what might does.
Eight sentences, each with an instruction in brackets such as make it less certain, make it an order or make it less urgent. Pupils rewrite each one with a new modal verb on two lines.
Question 1 asks which modal verb pupils used to make a sentence an order. Question 2 asks how might changes a sentence. Both need full sentences.
A sample answer for each sentence that lists other verbs that also work, such as might, could or may for item 1, and sample answers to the two questions.

Pupils compare their answers to items 1 and 5. The key lists might, could and may, so more than one answer can be right.
