Year 5 EnglishModal Verbs3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 modal verbs, over three pages. A box lists the nine modal verbs: can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might and must. Pupils underline the modal verb in ten sentences, such as We might go to the cinema and You must wear a helmet, and circle the main verb that goes with it. Task 2 asks which sentences talk about something that has to happen and which about something that may or may not happen. Page 3 is the key. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 5 grammar.

How teachers use it

Grammar starter

Read the box aloud, then do sentences 1 and 2 together on the board before pupils work alone.

What follows a modal

Ask pupils what kind of verb comes straight after each modal. In these sentences it is go, wear, swim and so on.

Pair talk for Task 2

Let pairs choose their sentences aloud before they write. A few, such as 4 and 8, can be read in more than one way, so settle the answers as a class.
