About this worksheet

A water cycle labelling sheet for Year 4 science. The picture shows the sun over the sea with arrows rising, white clouds, a grey cloud raining over a mountain, and a stream running down to the sea. Five lines, A to E, point to the stages. Pupils label them with evaporation, condensation, precipitation, surface run-off and collection from the word bank. The answer key on page 2 gives each stage in order. It links to the England National Curriculum states of matter unit.

Curriculum objectives covered

States of matter

“Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.”

A and B are evaporation and condensation. The sheet does not link evaporation to temperature, apart from the sun in the picture.

States of matter

“Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)”

Partly met. Water changes state in the cycle, but pupils do not observe, measure or research temperatures here.

What's inside this worksheet

The Water Cycle

A five-word word bank and the picture, with A at the rising arrows, C at the rain and E at the sea.

Answer key

The five stages from A to E.

How teachers use it

Bag water cycle

Tape a sealed bag with a little water in it to a sunny window. Pupils check it during the day and match what they see to A and B.

One sentence each

Ask pupils to write one sentence for each letter under the diagram, such as what happens to the rain at D.

From memory

Cover the word bank for confident pupils and see who can label all five stages without it.
