Changes of State Matching

Year 4 ScienceStates of Matter3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 4 matching sheet on changes of state, with an answer page. In Set 1, pupils match melting, freezing, evaporating, condensing, boiling and dissolving to their descriptions, with melting done as an example. Set 2 gives six everyday cases with temperatures, such as water in a freezer at -4°C and butter in a pan at 50°C. A final question asks why dissolving is not a true change of state. It is aligned to the England National Curriculum for science.

Curriculum objectives covered

States of matter

“Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases”

Each description names the solid, liquid or gas before and after the change. The sheet does not ask pupils to group materials directly.

States of matter

“Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)”

Set 2 gives a temperature in °C for all six cases, from -4°C in a freezer to 100°C in a kettle.

What's inside this worksheet

Set 1: Vocabulary Match

Six process names and six descriptions labelled A to F. The first answer, D for melting, is filled in.

Set 2: Heating and Cooling

Six cases to match to what happens, including a kettle at 100°C, a puddle at 18°C and candle wax cooling at 18°C.

Explain the Science

Pupils explain the difference between melting and dissolving.

How teachers use it

Ice and butter

Put ice and butter on a warm plate at the start of the lesson. Check them again before pupils do Set 2.

Sugar in tea

Use the final question to find pupils who think sugar melts in tea.

Mirror and kettle

Hold a cold mirror above a boiling kettle, at a safe distance, to show condensing before Set 2 question 3.
