Solids, Liquids and Gases Sort

Year 4 ScienceStates of Matter3 pages

About this worksheet

Sixteen materials from a science cupboard, ranging from runny honey to air in a tyre, make up this Year 4 states of matter sort. Pupils write each one under Solids, Liquids or Gases. A Watch out box warns that some items are tricks and tells pupils to ask whether a single piece keeps its own shape. Page 2 has two questions: which item was hardest to place, and one new example for each state with a reason. The answer key flags fine sand, cotton wool, icing sugar and runny honey as the tricky cases. The sheet is matched to the England National Curriculum for KS2 science.

What's inside this worksheet

Science cupboard sort

Pupils sort 16 word cards, including helium, cooking oil and an ice cube, into a three-column table headed Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Think Like a Scientist

Pupils explain which item was hardest to place and how they decided. They then add a solid, a liquid and a gas of their own, with a reason for each.

Answers

Six solids, five liquids and five gases, with a note on each tricky item and sample examples such as a metal spoon and vinegar.

How teachers use it

Pour the sand

Pour fine sand and icing sugar into a beaker in front of the class. Then show one grain under a hand lens, so pupils see that it keeps its shape.

Cut and sort

Cut the 16 cards apart and give each group a large three-column sheet. The group must agree on a card before anyone sticks it down.

Exit question

Ask pupils for one sentence on why runny honey is a liquid even though it pours slowly. It shows who can use the shape test from the Watch out box.
