Pitch and Volume Knowledge Check

Year 4 ScienceSound4 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 4 science knowledge check on pitch and volume, over four pages with an answer key. Pupils sort four descriptions into pitch or volume. A drum with rice on its skin then links stronger vibrations with louder sounds. Four sets of pan pipes labelled A to D, tallest to shortest, lead into questions on the highest and lowest notes, followed by patterns for guitar strings, elastic bands and xylophone bars. The last section applies both ideas to a ruler twanged on a desk and a guitar string plucked harder. It meets both England National Curriculum objectives for this part of sound.

What's inside this worksheet

Pitch or Volume?

Four rows to tick, such as A squeaky mouse squeak compared to a cow's low moo.

Volume and Vibrations

Mia taps a drum gently, then hard. Pupils choose quiet or loud, fill two gaps from weaker, stronger, quieter and louder, and complete the rule.

Pitch and Object Features

Pupils pick the highest and lowest pipe, then circle higher or lower for thicker strings, tighter bands and shorter xylophone bars.

Applying Your Knowledge

Pupils tick the two changes that make Leo's ruler louder and higher, then explain why plucking harder changes volume but not pitch.

How teachers use it

Rice drum demo

Put rice on a drum before the lesson and let pupils watch it jump before they answer question 5.

Ruler test

Give pairs a ruler to twang at the desk edge so they can test their two ticks in question 11.

Elastic band box

Stretch a band over an open box and tighten it while pupils listen, then check question 10.
