Parts of the Ear Labelling

Year 4 ScienceSound2 pages

About this worksheet

A labelling diagram for Year 4 science on the parts of the ear. A cross-section shows the outer ear, the ear canal, the eardrum, the small bones, the coiled cochlea and the yellow auditory nerve. Six lines marked A to F point to them. Pupils copy each name from a six-word word bank. The answer key on page 2 runs from A, the pinna, to F, the auditory nerve, in the order a sound travels. It supports the England National Curriculum sound unit.

Curriculum objectives covered

Sound

โ€œRecognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the earโ€

Partly met. The labels follow the route of a sound into the ear, but the sheet does not mention vibrations or a medium. Add that when you talk through the diagram.

What's inside this worksheet

Parts of the Ear

A word bank of six parts and a cross-section of the ear with label lines A to F.

Answer key

The six labels, which follow the path of a sound from the pinna inwards.

How teachers use it

Trace the sound

After labelling, ask pupils to draw an arrow from A to F to show the path a sound takes.

Drum demo

Put rice on a drum skin and tap the drum. Then point to C on the diagram and explain that the eardrum vibrates in the same way.

Sound unit opener

Use it early in the sound unit so pupils know the words eardrum and cochlea before you teach vibrations.
