How teachers use it

Introducing the rules

Work through IV and IX on the board with the subtracting rule before pupils fill in the table. The tricky rows are 4, 9, 14 and 19.

Number line talk

Ask pupils to estimate which number an arrow points to before they look at the numeral bank. It links Roman numerals to the number line they already use.

Reference card

Pupils keep the completed table in their maths books for later, when they meet dates on buildings and clocks.
