Convert Roman Numerals to Numbers

Year 4 MathsRoman Numerals3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 4 sheet for reading Roman numerals up to 100, over three pages. A worked example breaks LXVIII into L, X, V and III to reach 68. Pupils then convert sixteen numerals, from XIII and XXIV to XCVI and XCVIII. Page 2 asks them to put XL, XIX, LX, XC and LXX in order from smallest to largest, then to write < or > between XLV and LXV, and between XCII and LXXXIX. The key shows every answer. It follows England National Curriculum number and place value.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - number and place value

โ€œread Roman numerals to 100 (I to C) and know that over time, the numeral system changed to include the concept of zero and place valueโ€

All sixteen items on page 1 ask pupils to read a numeral from XIII to XCVIII and give its value.

What's inside this worksheet

Worked Example

LXVIII = L + X + V + III = 50 + 10 + 5 + 3 = 68, with a guide to I, V, X, L and C.

Practise Converting

Sixteen numerals in boxes, such as XXIX, XLVIII, LIX, LXXXII and XCVIII, to write as numbers.

Order and Compare Roman Numerals

A row of five numerals to write from smallest to largest, then two comparisons to complete with < or >.

Answers

The sixteen numbers, the order with each value shown, and both comparisons.

How teachers use it

Partition first

Ask pupils to underline each letter group before adding, as in the worked example. Do number 1 together.

Spot the subtractive pairs

Point out XLII, XLVIII, LIX and XCIII, where a smaller letter comes before a larger one, and ask pupils to circle that pair first.

Plenary

Use the ordering task at the end of the lesson. A pupil who writes XIX after XL has compared the letters, not the values.
