Convert Numbers to Roman Numerals

Year 4 MathsRoman Numerals3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 4 conversion sheet for numbers up to 100 over three pages. A key box adds L = 50 and C = 100 to I, V and X, and a worked example splits 47 into 40 and 7 to make XLVII. Pupils then write sixteen numbers as numerals, from 23 and 35 to 89, 99 and 100. Page 2 asks for the longest numeral, the pupil's own age, today's day of the month, and 60 and 66. The key lists every answer. It follows England National Curriculum number and place value.

What's inside this worksheet

Key and Worked Example

A key for I, V, X, L and C, and the worked example 47 = 40 + 7 = XL + VII = XLVII.

Convert the Numbers

Sixteen numbers in boxes: 23, 35, 40, 44, 49, 50, 56, 64, 72, 78, 89, 90, 91, 95, 99 and 100.

Roman Numeral Questions

Pupils pick out the longest numeral from their page 1 answers, write their age and today's date as numerals, then write 60 and 66.

Answers

All sixteen numerals, the longest one (LXXVIII, seven letters) and the answers for 60 and 66. Age and date answers vary, so the key shows the possible range.

How teachers use it

Teaching tens and ones

Model 47 with the worked example. Then ask pupils to say the tens and ones aloud before they write numbers such as 64 and 78.

Longest numeral

Make Part 2 question 1 a quick race to find the longest numeral. Talk about why 78 needs more letters than 89.

Real-life numerals

Pupils write their age and the date, then check each other's answers. Link it to dates on buildings or at the end of old films.
