Draw Shapes With a Given Area

Year 4 MathsArea3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 4 area sheet. Page 1 has four boxes headed Area = 6, 10, 12 and 15 squares, each with a grid, and pupils draw two different rectilinear shapes in every box. Page 2 asks for the perimeter of the two shapes with an area of 12 and whether the perimeters match. Page 3 gives sample answers, such as 3 by 4 and 2 by 6 rectangles for an area of 12. It follows England National Curriculum Year 4 measurement.

Curriculum objectives covered

Measurement

โ€œfind the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squaresโ€

Pupils draw shapes of 6, 10, 12 and 15 squares, so they count squares for every shape.

Measurement

โ€œmeasure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metresโ€

Questions 1 and 2 on page 2 ask for the perimeter of the two shapes with an area of 12.

What's inside this worksheet

Draw Rectilinear Shapes

Four boxes, each holding a square grid. Pupils draw two different shapes for areas of 6, 10, 12 and 15 squares, where each small square is 1 cm squared.

Compare the Perimeters

Two boxes for the perimeter of each area-12 shape, then a yes or no tick box and four lines to say what they notice.

Answers

Sample pairs for each area, perimeters of 14 cm and 16 cm for the 3 by 4 and 2 by 6 rectangles, and a note that either tick is right if it matches the pupil's shapes.

How teachers use it

Swap and count

Ask pupils to swap sheets and count the squares in each other's shapes. Any shape that is one square out gets redrawn.

Beyond rectangles

Push confident pupils to try an L-shape for an area of 12. Its perimeter is different again, and question 3 becomes a better talking point.

Perimeter board

Collect the perimeters of the area-12 shapes on the board. Pupils see that one area can give 14 cm, 16 cm or 26 cm.
