A one-page area check for Year 4, with the answers on page 2. Pupils count the squares in a rectangle, an L shape and a T shape on centimetre grids, then colour squares on an empty grid to make a shape with an area of 9 squares. The last question gives a 5 cm by 3 cm rectangle and asks for its area and its perimeter. It follows England National Curriculum measurement and suits the end of an area topic.

Pin up three different 9-square shapes from pupils. Ask the class to confirm each one by counting.
Area or perimeter
Look at question 5 for pupils who write 15 in both gaps. They have found the area twice and have not counted round the edge.
