Area Problems

Year 4 MathsArea3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 4 area problems set in real places, over three pages. Task 1 shows floor plans of a bedroom, an L-shaped kitchen and a hall, where each square is 1 m by 1 m and counts as one carpet tile. Pupils count the tiles for each room. Task 2 draws three garden beds on grids. Pupils find each area, then pick the bed with the most planting space and the bed that needs the most fence. The key gives areas and perimeters. It follows England National Curriculum measurement.

Curriculum objectives covered

Measurement

โ€œfind the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squaresโ€

Questions 1 to 3 on page 1 and the area counts on page 2 all use 1 m squares, up to 12 for the bedroom and 11 for Bed C.

Measurement

โ€œmeasure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metresโ€

Question 3 on page 2 asks which bed needs the most fence, so pupils compare the distance round Beds A, B and C. The key gives 14 m, 12 m and 18 m.

What's inside this worksheet

Carpet Tiles

Three floor plans: a rectangular bedroom, an L-shaped kitchen and a long thin hall. Pupils write how many square tiles cover each floor.

Garden Beds

Bed A is a 5 by 2 rectangle, Bed B a 3 by 3 square and Bed C an L shape. Pupils count each area in mยฒ, then choose the bed with the most space and the bed with the most fence.

Answers

Tile counts of 12, 10 and 6, bed areas of 10, 9 and 11 mยฒ, and perimeters of 14 m, 12 m and 18 m.

How teachers use it

Floor plan in the classroom

Mark out a 4 by 3 floor with tape and let pupils lay 12 squares of paper as tiles. Then they do page 1.

Area against perimeter

Bed C wins on both area and fence here. Ask pupils to draw a new bed with the same area as Bed A but a different fence length.

Extra support

Pupils who find counting hard can shade each row of tiles in a different colour on page 1 before they add.
