Roman Soldier Equipment Labelling

Year 4 HistoryRoman Britain2 pages

About this worksheet

Eight lines, lettered A to H, point to the kit on a full-length picture of a Roman legionary in this Year 4 history sheet. Pupils write the right name on each line from a word bank. The bank gives Latin names with English in brackets, such as galea (helmet), pilum (javelin) and lorica segmentata (armour). The tunic is the one item with no Latin name. The instructions ask pupils to check their spelling, and the second page lists the correct label for each letter. The sheet is set to the England National Curriculum for KS2 history.

What's inside this worksheet

Roman Legionary Equipment

Pupils label eight pointer lines, from the helmet at A down to the sandals at H, using a word bank that also includes the scutum, cingulum and gladius.

Answers

Letters A to H with the Latin and English name for each piece, for example G: Gladius (sword) and E: Scutum (shield).

How teachers use it

Sticky note soldier

Give a volunteer a cardboard shield and a broom handle for a pilum. The class labels them with sticky notes before filling in the sheet.

Word roots

Point out that lorica segmentata contains the word segment, then ask pupils to count the metal bands on the armour in the picture.

Peer marking

Swap sheets and mark against page 2. Caligae and cingulum are the two spellings most likely to slip, so check those first.
