Year 4 HistoryRoman Britain1 page

About this worksheet

A one-page Year 4 history knowledge organiser on Roman Britain, matched to the England National Curriculum. Its timeline has five dates, from Julius Caesar's two invasions in 55 and 54 BC to the end of Roman rule around AD 410. Claudius, Boudicca and Hadrian's 73-mile wall come in between. A labelled legionary names the galea, lorica segmentata, scutum, gladius and pilum. Seven vocabulary terms include legion, villa, aqueduct and Romanisation. Four questions with short answers explain why the Romans invaded and how they changed Britain, from straight roads to hypocausts.

What's inside this worksheet

Timeline

Five dated entries, each with an icon: Caesar's landings in 55 and 54 BC, Claudius in AD 43, Boudicca's rebellion in AD 60 to 61, Hadrian's wall in AD 122 and the end of Roman rule around AD 410.

The Roman Army

A soldier in a red tunic and strip armour holds a pilum and a curved red shield. Five labels give the Latin name and job of each piece of kit, such as the gladius worn on the right hip.

Key Vocabulary

Seven terms in a table: empire, legion (around 5,000 citizen soldiers), Celts, Iceni, villa, aqueduct and Romanisation.

Key Questions

Four short answers. One lists lead, tin, gold, farmland and enslaved people as reasons to invade. Another explains why Boudicca rebelled, and the last names Londinium, bathhouses and hypocausts among the changes the Romans made.

How teachers use it

Dates on the board

Write the five dates on the board with the timeline covered. Pupils say what happened at each one, then uncover the sheet to check.

Kit a volunteer

Read out the five army labels and have the class point to where each piece sits on a pupil at the front. The gladius on the right hip catches most of them out.

Before the topic test

Send it home a week before assessment so pupils learn the seven vocabulary terms. The four key questions work as a self-quiz if they cover the answers.
