Skeletons and Muscles Cloze

Year 3 ScienceAnimals Including Humans3 pages

About this worksheet

A cloze passage for Year 3 science on skeletons and muscles. Pupils use each of the twelve words in the bank once. The passage, The Living Framework, gives the skeleton three jobs: support, protection and movement. It names the spine, skull and ribs, then explains joints and how muscles contract and relax in pairs at the elbow. Think and Apply asks for two leg joints and a sentence with one bank word. The answer key gives all twelve gaps in order. It follows the England National Curriculum Year 3 objective on skeletons and muscles.

What's inside this worksheet

Skeletons and Muscles: How Our Bodies Work

The word bank: joints, protect, bones, contract, spine, muscles, relax, support, skull, pairs, movement and ribs.

The Living Framework

Five paragraphs with twelve gaps. They go from more than two hundred bones to the skull as a helmet and the ribs as a cage.

Think and Apply

Pupils name two joints that bend the legs and write their own science sentence with a bank word. A picture shows the bone, elbow and muscle inside a bent arm.

How teachers use it

Feel it

Ask pupils to hold their upper arm while they bend the elbow. They feel the muscle contract before they fill the last two gaps.

Body outline

Draw round a pupil on paper and add the spine, skull, ribs and joints from the passage.

Marking

Contract and relax are easy to swap. Check those two gaps first.
