Food Groups and Nutrition Sorting

Year 3 ScienceAnimals Including Humans3 pages

About this worksheet

A school kitchen delivery has arrived in a muddle, and pupils sort it. Sixteen foods, from wholemeal bread and salmon fillet to olive oil and sweetcorn, go into a four-column table: Fruit and Vegetables, Starchy Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Dairy and Fats. Each column heading says what that group does for the body, for example slow-release energy or growth and repair. Page 2 asks which food was hardest to place and has pupils add a food of their own to each group. The answer key explains the tricky ones, including why butter sits with fats and oils on the Eatwell Guide. It fits Year 3 science in the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Animals, including humans

โ€œIdentify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eatโ€

Question 1 sorts 16 foods by type, and each column names what that type gives the body. Question 3 asks pupils to explain the job of one food.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort the delivery

Pupils write 16 foods from the word bank into four columns. Some are easy, such as broccoli and brown rice. Boiled potato, baked beans and butter take more thought.

Think Like a Nutritionist

Question 2 asks which food was the trickiest to place, with a hint about potatoes, baked beans and butter. Question 3 asks for one new food in each group and the job one of them does.

Answers

The completed table, with five foods under Dairy and Fats. Notes explain that a potato counts as a starchy carbohydrate and that baked beans go with proteins.

How teachers use it

Real packaging

Bring in empty packets of porridge oats, baked beans and butter. Let groups place the real items before they write anything.

Argue it out

Question 2 works well as a class debate. Expect some pupils to put the potato with vegetables, then read them the answer key note.

Lunchbox check

After the sort, pupils list what is in their own lunch and tick which of the four columns it covers.
