Healthy Eating Mind Map

Year 3 ScienceAnimals Including Humans2 pages

About this worksheet

A two-page mind map on nutrition for Year 3 science, titled Fuel for Life: What Humans Need to Eat. Five branches each hold three prompt questions and space to write. They cover why we must eat, carbohydrates and fats, protein, vitamins and minerals, and water. The sixth branch is blank for pupils to choose a topic, with ideas such as My Balanced Lunchbox and The Five-a-Day Challenge. There is no answer key, so pupils' notes come from what they have learned in class. It follows the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Animals, including humans

โ€œIdentify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eatโ€

The Why We Must Eat branch asks why humans cannot make their own food, and the next four branches cover the types of nutrition. Amounts come up only in prompts such as small amounts of healthy fats.

What's inside this worksheet

Branch: Why We Must Eat

Prompts ask why plants can make food but humans cannot, and what happens to the body without enough nutrition.

Branch: The Energy Fuel

Pupils name the nutrient group for slow-release energy, three starchy foods, and why we need small amounts of fat.

Branch: The Body Builders

Prompts on protein for muscle growth, protein foods for vegetarians and vegans, and animal products rich in protein.

Branch: The Health Heroes

Questions on colourful foods, how vitamins protect us from illness, and the mineral that builds bones and teeth.

Branch: The Hydration Station

Pupils write why we need plain water every day, how we lose water in sport, and some water-rich foods.

Branch: Invent Your Own Branch

An open branch for a topic pupils choose, such as Foods for Active Athletes.

How teachers use it

End of unit recall

Give it out at the end of a nutrition unit with books closed. The empty branches show what each pupil remembers.

Group branches

Give each group one branch and a sheet of sugar paper. Groups teach their branch to the class while everyone else adds notes.

Lunchbox link

Pupils who choose My Balanced Lunchbox for the last branch can draw their own lunch and label the nutrient groups.
