Shade Equivalent Fractions

Year 3 MathsEquivalent Fractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 3 sheet where pupils shade fractions and write equivalent ones. Page 1 has six pairs of bars: halves and quarters, thirds and sixths, quarters and eighths, halves and sixths, thirds and sixths, then quarters and eighths again. Pupils shade the fraction named on each bar and finish the equation, such as 2/3 = ?/6. Page 2 has four circles split into 2, 4, 4 and 8 parts, which pupils shade and then pair up. The key is on page 3. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 3 fractions.

Number - fractions

โ€œrecognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominatorsโ€

Pupils shade ten diagrams (six pairs of bars and four circles) and write the equivalent fractions they show.

What's inside this worksheet

Shade the Fraction Bars

Six cards, each with a top bar and a bottom bar and an equation with a blank numerator, from 1/2 = ?/4 to 3/4 = ?/8. Pupils shade both bars and write the missing number.

Shade and Match the Circles

Circles A to D, split into halves, quarters, quarters and eighths, to shade as 1/2, 2/4, 1/4 and 2/8.

Equivalent pairs

Question 7 asks which circle goes with A and which goes with C, and for the two equal fractions each pair shows.

Answers

How many parts to shade on each bar, the shading for each circle, and the two pairs: A and B, C and D.

How teachers use it

Colour in pairs

Use two colours for each pair of bars so pupils can see that the shaded parts end at the same place.

Predict first

Before pupils shade the bottom bar, ask them to say how many parts they expect to need. Then they check against the key.

Circles at the end

Keep page 2 for pupils who finish early. The pairing in question 7 shows who sees that 1/4 and 2/8 are equal.
