Fraction Wall Equivalent Fractions

Year 3 MathsEquivalent Fractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 3 sheet built on a fraction wall with six rows: one whole, halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and eighths. Pupils use the wall to find ten missing numerators, such as 1/2 = ?/4 and 3/4 = ?/8. Page 2 repeats the wall for two questions. The first asks for three fractions equal to 1/2. The second asks whether 1/3 is equal to 2/8 and how pupils know. The key is on page 3. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 3 fractions.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - fractions

โ€œrecognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominatorsโ€

The wall is the diagram, and questions 1 to 10 use it to find equivalent fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8.

What's inside this worksheet

Equivalent Fractions

A colour-coded wall with every part labelled, then ten number sentences from 1/2 = ?/4 to 6/6 = ?/3 to complete.

Using the Fraction Wall

The wall again. Question 11 asks for three fractions equal to 1/2, and question 12 asks pupils to compare 1/3 and 2/8 and explain.

Answers

Each missing number with its full equation, such as 3/4 = 6/8, then 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 for question 11 and a reason for question 12.

How teachers use it

Slide a strip

Give pupils a strip of paper to lay along the wall, so they can see where the edges of the eighths line up with the quarters and halves.

Question 12

Use question 12 as a talking point. The key reasons that 2/8 is the same size as 1/4, which is smaller than 1/3.

Small group support

Let a group do questions 1 to 4 with the wall in front of them before they try the sixths and eighths.
