Missing Numbers in Equivalent Fractions

Year 3 MathsEquivalent Fractions3 pages

About this worksheet

Equivalent fractions for Year 3, over three pages. A set of fraction strips for halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and eighths sits at the top of page 1 as a help. Pupils then complete twelve number sentences with one missing number, such as 1/2 = ?/8 and 2/3 = 4/?. Page 2 is a challenge to write two different fractions equal to 1/2 and two equal to 1/4. The key shows every missing number as a full equation. It follows England National Curriculum fractions.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - fractions

โ€œrecognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominatorsโ€

The fraction strips are the diagram, and questions 1 to 12 ask pupils to use them to find equivalent fractions with denominators up to 8.

What's inside this worksheet

Fraction strips

Five coloured strips, one each for halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and eighths, drawn the same length so pupils can compare them.

Missing numbers

Twelve boxes, each with a fraction pair and a question mark. Some hide the numerator, as in 1/4 = ?/8, and some hide the denominator, as in 4/8 = 1/?.

Challenge

Questions 13 and 14 each give two answer boxes, for fractions equal to 1/2 and to 1/4.

Answers

Every missing number as a complete equation, such as 6/8 = 3/4. The challenge answers list more fractions to accept, like 5/10 and 3/12.

How teachers use it

Using the strips

Show pupils how to lay a ruler down the strips and see which fractions line up. Then let them try questions 1 to 6 alone.

Missing denominators

Questions 4, 6, 8 and 9 hide the denominator instead of the numerator. Keep them for pupils who found the first set easy.

Challenge talk

Pairs compare their answers to questions 13 and 14. There are many right answers, so ask each pair to prove one using the strips.
