Match Equivalent Fractions

Year 3 MathsEquivalent Fractions3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 3 sheet in two parts, with the key on page 3. Page 1 shows five shaded shapes, two bars, two circles and a rectangle, and pupils match each one to a written fraction from 1/3, 3/4, 1/2, 2/3 and 1/4 by drawing a line and writing the letter in the middle box. Page 2 has three groups of three shapes. Two shapes in each group show equivalent fractions, and pupils tick the odd one out. It follows the England National Curriculum for Year 3 fractions.

What's inside this worksheet

Match the Equivalent Fractions

A three-column table with a shaded shape, a box for the matching letter and a lettered fraction. The shapes show 2/4, 2/6, 2/8, 6/8 and 4/6, and the fractions are listed in a different order.

Odd One Out

Three groups of three shapes, labelled 1/2, 2/4 and 3/8, then 1/3, 2/6 and 2/4, then 3/4, 6/8 and 1/4. Pupils tick the one that is not equivalent to the other two.

Answers

Each shape paired with its letter, then the odd one out in each group with the equal pair named.

How teachers use it

Warm-up

Show the 2/4 bar on the board and ask pupils to name a simpler fraction for it before they start the matching.

Odd one out talk

In group 2, 2/4 is the odd one out. Ask pupils how they know it is not equal to 1/3 when 2/6 is.

Pairs

Pupils compare page 1 matches with a partner and say how each shape was checked, by counting parts or by lining up the shading.
