Make Your Own Pictogram

Year 2 MathsPictograms3 pages

About this worksheet

A hands-on pictogram task for Year 2, over three pages. Pupils ask friends for their favourite colour out of red, blue, green, yellow and purple, and fill in a tally chart with totals. A short guide helps them choose a key of 1 or 2 children per symbol. On page 2 they give the pictogram a title, fill in the key, draw it and write three questions for a partner. Page 3 gives sample answers with made-up data. It follows England National Curriculum statistics for Year 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Tally Chart

A blank chart with rows for red, blue, green, yellow and purple and columns for Tally and Total, plus a short guide to choosing the key.

Draw Your Pictogram

An empty grid with a title line, five colour rows and a key box to complete. Pupils draw their symbols from the tally chart.

Questions for a Partner

Three lines for pupils to write questions about their own pictogram.

Sample Answers

A completed tally chart with made-up totals of 4, 6, 2, 3 and 5, the pictogram rows in circles and half circles, and three sample questions.

How teachers use it

Class survey

Send pupils round the room with a clipboard and pencil to tally. Agree that each child votes once so totals can be compared.

Choosing a key

Before page 2, ask pupils whether their totals are small or large and agree a key. Odd totals with a key of 2 call for half symbols.

Partner swap

Pupils swap sheets and answer each other's three questions, then check against the pictogram.
