Weather and Seasons Cloze

Year 1 ScienceSeasonal Changes3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 1 pupils read about the four seasons in order and fill twelve gaps from a twelve-word bank, using each word once. The passage goes from pink blossom and lambs in spring to snow and thick coats in winter. It also says summer days are longer and winter days shorter. A picture shows one tree in all four seasons. Question 13 asks pupils to choose a word from the bank and write a sentence about the weather. The sheet runs to three pages, and the answer key lists all twelve words with two model sentences. It follows the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Seasonal changes

โ€œObserve and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.โ€

Gaps 4, 7 and 11 name the weather (sunny, wind, snow), and gaps 5 and 10 say summer days are longer and winter days are shorter.

Seasonal changes

โ€œObserve changes across the four seasonsโ€

The passage follows the year from spring to winter, with blossom, lambs and falling leaves. Pupils read about the changes here, so real observation happens outside the sheet.

What's inside this worksheet

The Story of the Four Seasons

A word bank of twelve words, such as blossom, wind, longer and coats, under a picture of one tree through the year.

Weather Through the Year

A four-paragraph passage with twelve numbered gaps, one paragraph for each season.

My Season Sentence

Question 13 asks pupils to pick a favourite word from the bank and write a sentence about the weather.

How teachers use it

Seasons walk

Take the class to look at one tree in the school grounds, then compare it with the tree picture before pupils start the passage.

Read aloud

Read the passage aloud with a pause at each gap and let pupils call out a word. Then they fill the gaps on their own.

Day length talk

Stop at gaps 5 and 10 and ask when it gets dark at home in summer and in winter. The words longer and shorter then make sense.
