Observing Seasonal Changes Guided Notes

Year 1 ScienceSeasonal Changes3 pages

About this worksheet

Guided notes on the four seasons for Year 1, set out over three pages with an answer key. Pupils listen to the lesson and fill ten gaps from an eleven-word bank that runs from seasons to dark. The notes move from the order of the seasons to weather and nature, then to day length in summer and winter. Two short questions ask about the clothes pupils wear when it is cold and a favourite sunny-day activity. Both Year 1 seasonal changes objectives in the England National Curriculum are touched on.

What's inside this worksheet

The Four Seasons

Five gap sentences, from the four seasons in every year to winter as the coldest season, with a picture of one oak tree shown in all four seasons.

Weather and Nature

Three gaps for leaves, warm and cold beside a picture of a child catching autumn leaves. Pupils then write what they wear to stay cosy.

Daytime and the Sun

Two gaps on long summer days with lots of daylight and winter afternoons that turn dark early, then a question about a favourite summer activity outdoors.

How teachers use it

Teach alongside

Read each gap sentence aloud as you show photos, and pause so pupils find the word in the bank.

Dark by teatime

Use Daytime and the Sun to start a class record of what time it gets dark each month.

Coat check

Before the cosy-clothes question, let a few pupils put on a woolly hat and scarf from the dressing-up box.
