Wild and Garden Plants Matching

Year 1 SciencePlants3 pages

About this worksheet

Ten common plants appear on this Year 1 science matching sheet, in two sets of five. In the first set pupils join Daisy, Dandelion, Sunflower, Rose and Tulip to their pictures. The second set has Nettle, Clover, Daffodil, Oak and Holly. The pictures sit in a different order from the names, so pupils must look at petals, leaves and berries rather than follow a straight line. The answer key on page 3 names the clue in each picture, such as acorns in cups for the oak and spiny-edged leaves for the holly. The sheet matches the Year 1 plants unit in the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Plants

โ€œIdentify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen treesโ€

Questions 1 and 2 ask pupils to name ten plants from pictures. Oak and holly in question 2 give one deciduous and one evergreen example.

What's inside this worksheet

Question 1: garden and wild flowers

Pupils draw a line from each of five names to a picture. The dandelion comes first in the picture column and the daisies third, so the two are easy to mix up.

Question 2: wild plants and trees

Pupils match Nettle, Clover, Daffodil, Oak and Holly. Holly, with its red berries, is the first picture, and the oak shows a twig with acorns.

Answers

Every match with the feature that gives it away, for example three rounded leaflets and a round flower head for clover.

How teachers use it

Before a plant walk

Do question 2 in class, then go outside and look for dandelions, clover and daisies on the school field. Warn the class about nettles first.

Leaf clues

Read out a clue from the answer key, such as toothed leaves with fine hairs, and ask pupils to point to the picture it describes.

Sorting follow-up

Ask pupils to put the ten plants into two groups: ones they might find in a garden bed and ones that grow wild.
