Plants KWL Chart

Year 1 SciencePlants3 pages

About this worksheet

A lesson starter for a Year 1 plants topic. A garden picture with a tree, dandelions on a lawn and flowers sits beside four multiple-choice questions on roots, flowers, evergreen trees and a common wild plant. Pupils then fill in a KWL chart in words or pictures. The K and W boxes are for the start of the lesson, and the L box waits until the end. The answer key gives the four answers and sample chart entries. It ties to the England National Curriculum objectives on plant structure and naming plants.

What's inside this worksheet

Quick Plant Warm-Up

Pupils tick which part takes in water, which part attracts bees, what an evergreen tree does in winter, and pick the daisy over a banana plant and a cactus.

My Plant KWL Chart

Three boxes headed What I Know, What I Wonder and What I Learnt. Pupils fill the first two now and the last at the end of the lesson.

How teachers use it

First lesson of the topic

Keep the W boxes. The questions pupils write there make a good list of things to look for on a plant walk.

School grounds

Take question 4 outside and see who can find a daisy on the field.

End of the lesson

Give the sheets back so pupils fill the L box and check if they can now answer their own W questions.
