Common Animals Fact File

Year 1 ScienceAnimals Including Humans3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 1 pupils complete a fact file on one common British mammal, the red fox, across three pages. A picture shows the fox's reddish-orange coat, white chest, pointed ears and bushy tail. A word bank lists animal groups, body parts, diet words and homes. Pupils fill six key facts, from animal group to the name of a baby fox, then add one surprising fact and a short summary of why foxes suit Britain. The answer key gives model answers for every box. The science objectives come from the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Animals, including humans

โ€œIdentify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammalsโ€

Pupils name the fox's group, mammal, from the five groups in the word bank. Only one animal appears, so plan other examples.

Animals, including humans

โ€œDescribe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets)โ€

Partial. The Key Body Parts box asks pupils to describe the fox's structure, but there is no second animal to compare it with.

What's inside this worksheet

Common Animals: The Red Fox

A picture of a fox sitting in a meadow and a word bank with the five animal groups, body parts such as bushy tail and pointed snout, carnivore, herbivore and omnivore, and homes such as den and town garden.

Key Facts

Six boxes to fill: animal group, body covering, key body parts, habitat, diet and the name of a baby fox.

Did You Know?

Space for one surprising fact about red foxes. The key suggests that a fox's tail is called a brush.

Fox Summary

Pupils write 2 to 3 sentences on why the red fox is well suited to living in Britain.

How teachers use it

Model then repeat

Fill in the fox file together, then ask pupils to make the same six facts about a hedgehog on plain paper.

Book corner

Read a short book about foxes first, so pupils have a surprising fact to write down. The tail called a brush is a good one if nobody finds a fact.

Support the summary

The Fox Summary asks for 2 to 3 sentences, which is a lot for Year 1. Let some pupils say their summary to an adult who scribes it.
