Carnivores, Herbivores and Omnivores Knowledge Check

Year 1 ScienceAnimals Including Humans5 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 1 science knowledge check on what animals eat, across five pages with the answer key on the last page. It starts with the meaning of carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. Pupils then classify pictures of a rabbit, lion, bear and cow, and sort a sheep, a tiger and a pig into a three-column table. The final section asks which group humans belong to, whether a horse is a carnivore, and for a drawing of a herbivore's food. It follows the England National Curriculum objective on carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

What Do Animals Eat?

Three tick-box questions. Pupils choose only plants, only meat or both plants and meat for each diet word.

Pictures of a rabbit, lion, bear and cow, each with a clue such as hunts zebras and antelopes. Pupils write the group from the word bank.

Sorting Animals

Pupils place Sheep, Tiger and Pig in the Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore columns.

Think and Apply

Pupils name the group for humans, judge the sentence A horse is a carnivore because it eats apples and hay, and draw one herbivore food.

How teachers use it

Before the topic

Give out questions 1 to 3 on their own to find out who already knows the three words.

Picture talk

Point to the bear by the river and ask pupils what it eats apart from berries.

Early finishers

Pupils who finish early can draw two more herbivore foods next to their answer to question 11.
