Animal Groups Sorting

Year 1 ScienceAnimals Including Humans3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 1 science sort over three pages. The signs at the wildlife park have blown away, and pupils write twelve animals from the word bank into a Mammals, Birds or Fish column, crossing each one off as they go. Four animals belong in each group. Dolphin, Bat and Penguin are the hard ones, since each looks or moves like a different group. Two Animal Detective Questions ask about the hardest animal and one new animal for each group. The answer key explains where those three tricky animals go and why. It follows the England National Curriculum unit Animals, including humans.

Animal Groups Table

Three columns headed Mammals, Birds and Fish for pupils to fill with four animals each.

How teachers use it

Whole-class vote

Hold up pictures of a bat and a penguin and take a vote on their group before anyone sees the sheet.

Cut and stick

Pupils who find writing hard can cut out the word bank and stick the animals into the table instead.

Next lesson

Add a frog and a lizard to the board the next day and ask which column they fit. Neither does, which leads into amphibians and reptiles.
