About this worksheet

A three-page Year 1 history sort about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The history museum has mixed up twelve fact cards, and pupils write each one under Florence Nightingale, Both Nurses or Mary Seacole. The cards include Lady with the Lamp, British Hotel, Herbal remedies and Paid own travel costs. Four cards belong in each column, and Crimean War and Travelled by ship go under Both Nurses. Two Historian Questions follow the sort. The answer key on page 3 fills in all three columns and gives example new facts. The sheet follows the England National Curriculum for KS1 history.

Curriculum objectives covered

Significant individuals

โ€œThe lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods [for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and LS Lowry, Rosa Parks and Emily Davison, Mary Seacole and/or Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell]โ€

The whole sort compares the two nurses the curriculum names, and the Both Nurses column shows what their lives had in common.

Events beyond living memory

โ€œEvents beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries]โ€

Partly met. The Crimean War card is the only event on the sheet, and pupils place it under Both Nurses.

What's inside this worksheet

Museum Fact Cards

Twelve cards to sort, from Born in Jamaica and Wealthy British family to Trained hospital nurses and Cleaner hospital wards.

Nurse Fact Sorter

A three-column chart headed Florence Nightingale, Both Nurses and Mary Seacole, with room for four facts in each.

Historian Questions

Pupils say which fact was hardest to place and why, then add one new fact of their own to each column.

How teachers use it

Before the sort

Read the twelve cards aloud first. Many Year 1 pupils will not know what British Hotel or Herbal remedies mean.

Talk partners

Ask pairs to argue about Travelled by ship before they write it down. Most will put it under one nurse only.

Plenary

Collect the new facts from question 2 on the board in three columns and see which column grows longest.
