About this worksheet

A Year 1 history sequencing sheet on Florence Nightingale, written for the England National Curriculum. Four picture cards, lettered A to D, each carry two short sentences. One shows Florence as a girl bandaging a dog's paw. Another shows the ship that took her and 38 nurses to the Crimean War. A third shows her with a lamp in the hospital at Scutari, and the last shows her outside her nursing school in London. Pupils write 1, 2, 3 or 4 in the box under each card. An answer key gives the order B, D, A, C, with a reason for each place.

Curriculum objectives covered

Significant individuals

โ€œThe lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods [for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and LS Lowry, Rosa Parks and Emily Davison, Mary Seacole and/or Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell]โ€

The whole sheet is about one life, Florence Nightingale's, from childhood to the training school. It does not compare her with Mary Seacole or with another period, so that part of the statement needs a second lesson.

What's inside this worksheet

Florence Nightingale Life Story Ordering

Pupils read cards A to D and write a number under each. The cards are out of order, so the hospital at Scutari (card A) comes first on the page but third in her life.

How teachers use it

Cut and stick

Cut the four cards apart and let pairs lay them out in order on the table before anyone writes a number.

Talk partners

Ask pupils which clue told them card C comes last. Most will point to the words returned home as a famous hero.

Washing line

Peg four large copies of the pictures on a line at the front and let four pupils swap them into the right order.
