Florence Nightingale Fact File

Year 1 HistoryFlorence Nightingale and Mary Seacole4 pages

About this worksheet

A four-page Year 1 history fact file about Florence Nightingale, written for the England National Curriculum. A picture shows her in a dark dress and white cap, holding a lit lamp on a hospital ward at night. Pupils draw their own portrait of her beside it. The Key Facts table asks for six things, from her full name and birth date to how she made hospitals better. Pupils then look for a surprising fact and write two sentences on why she is still remembered. The answer key gives model answers, including her pet owl Athena and the hospital at Scutari.

Curriculum objectives covered

Significant individuals

โ€œThe lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods [for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and LS Lowry, Rosa Parks and Emily Davison, Mary Seacole and/or Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell]โ€

The whole fact file is about one significant individual. The last section asks why we still remember her and how she changed nursing.

Events beyond living memory

โ€œEvents beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries]โ€

Only partly met. The Crimean War appears only in the answer key, as the answer to Where She Helped, so pupils meet it if they research that box.
