Ecosystem Changes: What Happens If?

5th Grade ScienceEcosystems6 pages

About this worksheet

A meadow food web on page 1 drives this 5th grade science sheet. Grass and clover feed rabbits, mice and grasshoppers, which feed snakes, foxes and hawks, and mushrooms and bacteria return nutrients to the soil. Students predict four changes, each with a because line: a disease that wipes out the clover, foxes leaving for a new neighborhood, a late spring freeze that kills the grasshoppers, and a chemical spill that destroys the decomposers. A challenge question asks which organism the meadow could least afford to lose. It ties to NGSS 5-LS2-1, and two answer pages give model predictions.

Curriculum objectives covered

5-LS2-1

โ€œDevelop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.โ€

Scenario D and the challenge ask what happens to matter when decomposers are gone, and every scenario is answered by following arrows in the meadow web.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1: The Meadow Food Web

Ten organisms joined by feeding arrows, dashed arrows into a decomposers box, and a dotted line labeled Nutrients returning to soil that runs back to the grass and clover.

Part 2: Ecosystem Scenarios

Four boxed scenarios. Each names two populations to predict, such as the rabbit and hawk after the foxes leave, with lines for a prediction and a because.

Part 3: Food Web Challenge

One extended question. Students choose the organism or group the meadow could least afford to lose and trace the effect on at least three others.

Answers

Model predictions for all four scenarios, plus two strong choices for the challenge: grass and the decomposers.

How teachers use it

Trace before predicting

Have students put a finger on the clover and follow every arrow out of it before they write Scenario A. The rabbit and grasshopper links are easy to miss in a busy web.

Debate the challenge

Split the class between grass and the decomposers for question 5 and let each side argue from the arrows. The key accepts both.

Partner check

After Scenario C, pairs swap sheets and read each other's because lines. A prediction that does not name an arrow goes back for another try.
