About this worksheet

Two parts on this 3-page 5th grade science sheet follow a bite of apple through the digestive system. Part 1 gives six picture cards in mixed order (stomach, mouth, large intestine, esophagus, small intestine, rectum) to number 1 to 6. Part 2 is a six-row flow chart where students name each organ and write what happens there from a word bank of six phrases. Page 3 is the answer key with the finished table.

What's inside this worksheet

Order the Organs

Six cards, each with a small picture and a Step blank. Students number them 1 to 6 to show the path food takes.

Follow a Bite of Apple

A word bank of six phrases, such as chewed and mixed with saliva and water absorbed, above a six-row table. Students write the organ name and the matching phrase for every stop.

Answers

The card order (mouth 1, esophagus 2, stomach 3, small intestine 4, large intestine 5, rectum 6) and the completed flow chart.

How teachers use it

Cut and shuffle

Print page 1, cut the six cards apart and let small groups agree on an order on the desk before anyone writes a number.

Two-day split

Do Part 1 one day and Part 2 the next. Students try the flow chart without the cards first, then check against page 1.

Apple slice

Give each student a slice of apple. Ask them to chew slowly and say what the mouth is doing before they fill in row 1.
