Nine questions over four pages check commas and title punctuation for 5th grade. Students choose the correct sentence in four multiple choice sets. They then add missing marks to four sentences, such as "Sarah please bring your math book pencils and eraser to the desk." Last, they proofread a short book review of Holes. The sheet covers L.5.2.a, L.5.2.b, L.5.2.c, and L.5.2.d, and the answer key gives every corrected sentence.

Three options for each of four rules: yes at the start of a sentence, a list of fruit, the tag question "aren't you," and a sentence with Charlotte's Web and the song "Let It Go."
Students rewrite "Before we leave we need to pack the car," a sentence with the poem The Road Not Taken, "Wow that movie was really exciting wasn't it," and the sentence to Sarah.
A four-sentence review of Holes needs the title underlined, a comma after Yes, commas in the list of what Stanley Yelnats has to do, and a comma before the tag question.
After all four rules
Give it once you have taught every comma rule. The multiple choice part takes about five minutes and shows which rule needs more work.
Direction wording
The directions say "Tick the box." Tell students to check the box, and remind them before Question 9 that underlining is the handwritten version of italics.
Proofreading pairs
Three commas go into Question 8. Let partners compare before you go over it, since many students add the comma after Sarah and forget the list.
