The Water Cycle in Everyday Life

4th Grade ScienceWater Cycle3 pages

About this worksheet

This 3-page 4th grade science worksheet links the water cycle to things students see at home. Page 1 has eight picture boxes, from a puddle drying up to hail on a car, and students circle E, C or P for evaporation, condensation or precipitation. Page 2 asks two written questions about a cold glass and a puddle. Page 3 is the answer key.

Curriculum objectives covered

โ€œSort everyday events into evaporation, condensation and precipitation.โ€

Page 1 gives three evaporation, three condensation and two precipitation events in mixed order.

โ€œExplain an everyday event by saying that water changes between a gas and a liquid.โ€

Page 2 asks why a cold glass gets wet and where the puddle water went.

What's inside this worksheet

Everyday Events

Eight picture boxes: a puddle drying up, wet clothes on a line, water drops on a cold glass, a foggy bathroom mirror, dew on grass, snow falling, hail on a car and a pot of boiling water getting lower. Each has E, C and P to circle.

Think About the Water Cycle

Two questions with five lines each. One asks why the outside of a cold glass gets wet, and one asks where the water in the puddle went.

Answers

E, C or P for each event, and full sentence answers to both questions.

How teachers use it

Before the lesson

Hand it out before you name the stages. Students use what they know about puddles and cold glasses, and the key shows which words to teach.

Talk about item 8

Boiling is fast evaporation, so students who circle E are right. Some will ask about the steam, which is a good way into condensation.

Home hunt

Ask students to find one more example of each letter at home, such as a mirror after a shower. Collect them on the board the next day.
