Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.

Part 1: Plot the Data

Twelve lengths (1/8, 3/8, 1/2, 1/4, 7/8, 3/8, 5/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 1/4, 5/8) go onto an axis ticked in eighths from 0 to 1 inch. Placing 1/4 and 1/2 requires the equivalents 2/8 and 4/8.

Part 2: Analyze and Solve

Questions 2 to 8 read the finished plot: the extremes and their difference, a count of beetles past 1/2 inch, the end-to-end total of the three 1/4-inch beetles, the 1/8 + 7/8 sum, and the most-common question with its two-way tie.

Do not hand out a finished plot. The plotting in Part 1 is where the eighths equivalence gets learned; Part 2 only works after it.

Catch the tie

Question 8 has two correct most-common lengths, 1/4 and 3/8 with three beetles each. Students who report only one read their own plot too fast.
