Reading a Town Map

3rd Grade Social StudiesMap Skills3 pages

About this worksheet

Students use a single map of Maple Town for every skill on this 3-page 3rd grade social studies worksheet. The map has a title, a key with seven symbols, a compass rose, a 4 by 4 grid labeled A to D and 1 to 4, and a scale where one square side equals one block. Page 2 has ten written questions, from the map title to walking directions between two buildings. Page 3 is the answer key.

Curriculum objectives covered

โ€œUse a map title, key, compass rose, grid and scale together to answer questions about a place.โ€

Questions 1 to 6 each need one of these map parts, and question 6 uses the scale of one block per square side.

โ€œGive directions between two places using north, south, east and west.โ€

Questions 5, 8 and 10 ask for a direction, the place reached by walking east, and a full route from the school to the library.

What's inside this worksheet

Maple Town map

A town map with the school in B1, the library in C2, the park in D2, the store in A2, houses in A1 and D1, and a river along row 4. The key lists school, library, park, river, road, house and store. Students read the map but write nothing on this page.

Map questions

Ten questions with writing lines. Students give the map title, say what the open book stands for, and name the place in C2. They find the school's square, the direction from the school to the river, and the blocks from the store to the park. They also name the squares with houses, say what is east of the library, and write directions from the school to the library.

Answer key

Short answers for all ten questions. Question 10 accepts east one block then south one block, or south one block then east one block.

How teachers use it

End of a map unit

Give it after separate lessons on keys, compass roses, grids and scales. Because one map covers all four, you can see which skill each student still needs.

Trace the route first

Before question 10, have students trace the walk from the school to the library with a finger. Both orders of the two moves are right, as the answer key says.

Compass check

Questions 5 and 8 depend on the compass rose, so point to north on the page before students start. A student who reads south as up will miss both.
