About this worksheet

This 3-page 3rd grade social studies worksheet teaches map grid coordinates on a 5 by 5 town map. Letters A to E run across the top and numbers 1 to 5 run down the side. Students name the place in squares B2, E1 and D4, then give the square for the park, the fire station and the post office. On page 2 they draw a house, a tree, a store and a pond in squares they are told. Page 3 is the answer key, with a filled grid.

What's inside this worksheet

Read the Town Map

A town map with a hospital in E1, a school in B2, a post office in D2, a park in C3, a library in D4 and a fire station in A5. Students answer six questions in boxes. Three ask what place is in a square (B2, E1, D4) and three ask which square holds the park, the fire station or the post office.

Make Your Own Map

A checklist of four directions: a house at A1, a tree at C4, a store at E5 and a pond at B3. Below it is an empty 5 by 5 grid for the drawings. The page reminds students to keep each drawing inside its own square.

Answer key

The six map answers, then a grid with the house, pond, tree and store in place so a drawing can be checked at a glance.

How teachers use it

Map unit warm-up

Read question 1 aloud and say the letter-first rule together: find the letter across the top, then the number down the side. The rest of page 1 then goes quickly.

Partner check

Students swap page 2 and read the four directions back to each other. The partner points to the square to confirm each drawing is where it was asked for.

Quick exit ticket

Cover the map and ask for the coordinates of the fire station on a sticky note. Students who write 5A instead of A5 need the letter-first rule again.
