About this worksheet

An end-of-unit quiz for 3rd grade social studies, worth 15 points and planned for about 20 minutes. Five parts fill three pages, and a two-page answer key gives the points for every item. Students use a picture timeline of Oak Creek Community, from 1820 log cabins to a 1995 computer library, and work out the 35 years between the schoolhouse and the first paved road. Two pictures of Maple Street, in 1880 and today, carry four questions on transportation, stores and water. The quiz covers C3 Framework standards D2.His.1.3-5, D2.His.2.3-5 and D2.His.14.3-5.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1: Vocabulary

Two fill-in sentences with a word bank of timeline, artifact, century and decade. Two of the words are not needed.

Part 2: Timeline

A five-event picture timeline. Students check which event came first and how many years passed between 1890 and 1925.

Part 3: Daily Life in the Past vs. Present

Students sort six items, such as a horse-drawn stagecoach, video calls and elementary schools, into Past Only, Both Past and Present, or Present Only. Each one earns half a point.

Part 5: Causes and Effects of Community Change

Two multiple-choice questions. One is about a railroad reaching a farming village, the other about cheaper cars and the growth of suburbs.

Part 4: Comparing Communities Over Time

Source A shows Maple Street in 1880 and Source B shows it today. Students describe two changes in transportation and one change and one similarity in how people buy food. Two more questions ask about paved roads and the old water pump.

Answers

Every answer with its points, the filled sorting table, and sample answers with scoring rules for questions 6 and 7.

How teachers use it

Word warm-up

Go over artifact, timeline, century and decade the day before. Part 1 uses only two of them, so the other two make a quick spoken warm-up.

Notice first

Before question 6, give pairs one minute to list what they see in each Maple Street picture. Those lists give them the details to write about.

Grading

Part 3 is scored in half points, so add it up last. The key counts each change or similarity in questions 6 and 7 as one point.
