This mind map sheet puts the life cycle idea at the center: every organism goes through birth, growth, reproduction, and death. Seven branches spread out from it. Four cover the stages, two cover plant life and animal life with words such as germination, seedling, larva, and pupa, and the last is a blank branch for an organism the student chooses. Each branch has one or two prompt questions. It fits NGSS 3-LS1-1.

The four stage branches cover the shared stages, and the Plant Life, Animal Life, and Your Branch sections show how cycles differ between organisms.
A short statement says that plants and animals are very different but share four main stages.
The Beginning (Birth), Getting Bigger (Growth), Making More (Reproduction), and The End (Death). Prompts ask about eggs or live babies, what cubs and seedlings need, and how death makes room for new life.
Students list the stages of a flowering plant using seed, germination, seedling, and flower. They then list the stages of an animal such as a frog or butterfly using egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Students write the life cycle of one plant or animal they choose, in order. They draw a big circle around the stage where it reproduces.
Before the unit
Have students fill in what they know on day one, in pencil. Return the sheet at the end of the unit and let them add in a different color.
Group chart
Give each table one branch to fill on chart paper, then combine them on the wall. The Your Branch organisms make a good gallery walk.
Study guide
Before a life cycles test, students can use the completed map as a review. The plant and animal word lists match the vocabulary most tests use.
